Gui Boratto: The Drill

Gui Boratto has always been hit or miss with me. Perhaps he is one of those guys that likes to think of himself as residing above the kick-snare-hat monotony of a slamming four to the floor beat (not that *I* would know anything about such elitism). He has a tendency to fall off of the deep and repetitive melodic end, and while he tempts such fate with The Drill, the layered textures and teasing melody make for a nice release. This piece really reminds me of the sound I think of when the Kompakt label comes up for discussion, and is (dare I say) almost danceable, which by most people’s standards is generally untreaded territory for Mr. Boratto.
